Summary of Tennessee Code Title 62

Tennessee Code § 62-35-118 outlines the training and qualification requirements for armed and unarmed security guards and officers in Tennessee.

Key Provisions:

  • General Training: Both armed and unarmed guards must complete 4 hours of general training covering orientation, legal powers, emergency procedures, and general duties. They must also pass an examination.
  • Armed Guard Requirements: In addition to the general training, armed guards must complete 8 hours of firearms training (legal limitations, handling, safety, and maintenance) and 4 hours of marksmanship training, achieving a minimum of 70% accuracy.
  • Less-Than-Lethal Devices: Guards carrying devices like clubs, stun guns, or pepper spray require specific training for each device.
  • School Security: Guards working in schools must undergo specialized training, including an 8-hour active shooter training course for armed guards.
  • Additional Requirements: Guards working in establishments serving alcohol must complete de-escalation, restraint, first aid, and CPR training.

Renewal Training Requirements

Unarmed Security Guards

In Tennessee, unarmed security guards must renew their registration every two years. This includes both unarmed security officers and proprietary unarmed security guards. 

Renewal process 

  • Registrations can be renewed up to three months after expiration
  • A renewal fee and penalty must be paid

Other security guard requirements

  • To work as a security guard in Tennessee, a person must be licensed and registered with the state 
  • The Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance Private Protective Services division regulates security officers in the state 
  • All candidates must complete the state-mandated unarmed guard training and pass a final exam 
  • Minimum requirements for security licensing in Tennessee are similar to most other states 

Refresher training 

  • As of January 1, 2023, all Unarmed Security Guard Registrants must complete two hours of refresher training every two years

Armed Security Guards

In Tennessee, armed security guards must renew their licenses every two years. Renewals can be done up to three months after the license expires. 

Renewal fees 

  • The renewal fee for an armed security guard is $60
  • The late renewal fee is $20 per month or part of a month that the renewal is late

Training requirements 

  • To renew an armed security guard license, you must complete a four-hour renewal course
  • The course satisfies the training requirement outlined in Tenn. Code Ann. § 62-35-110
  • You will receive electronic proof of training after completing the course

Other requirements to become a security guard 

  • Have a high school diploma
  • Maintain physical fitness
  • Improve communication skills
  • Pass a background check
  • Receive training
  • Continue training while working

Disqualification 

  • A conviction for any felony or any misdemeanor involving shooting a firearm or other weapon, shoplifting, assault and battery, or other act of violence against persons or property will disqualify an applicant
